Hackney favourite Lardo is opening FERAL, an Italian-inspired restaurant and bar, upstairs at Peckham pub John the Unicorn, Restaurant Online and London On The Inside report.

Where and when: Lardo owner Nathan Woodhead has fitted a new kitchen and dining room upstairs at 157-159 Rye Lane, with its own Negroni aperitivo bar. Local drinks firm Gosnells has refurbished the pub as a neighbourhood spot and music bar. Soft openings run on 11 and 12 November with 50% off restaurant food. The full opening is Friday 13 November.

The food: head chef Marta Sandini has built the menu around 'folds', flatbreads meant to be eaten one-handed. Options include cheese and pickle with cacio e pepe, a carbonara fold, a spiced lamb kebab fold and a jerk chicken shop fold. Bar snacks run from truffle cacio e pepe arancini to a five-spice lasagne skewer. Larger plates include gnocchi with vodka sauce and spaghetti and meatballs. Dessert is tiramisu or soft serve.

The vibe: Woodhead says there is deep-fried lasagne, curry sauce in unexpected places, and flatbreads that leave one hand free for your drink.

Book the soft opening if you can. Bring a mate who does not mind sauce on their shirt.
