Tokyo on Westgate Road has closed after 22 years

The bar called last orders with a terrace party, and the building has been bought by the group behind The Dubliner.

One of Newcastle's longest-running bars has gone. Tokyo, which opened on Westgate Road in 2004, had its final night on Saturday 17 October with a party on its terrace, Chronicle Live reports. After 22 years, it was one of the longest-running bars in the city centre, best known for its terrace.

What happens next: the building went on sale at £1.1m and has been bought by Hymus Group, the operator behind The Dubliner on the Quayside and Dirty Murphy's, which took over the old Mushroom on Grainger Street. Its plans for the site haven't been shared yet.

Why it matters for the city: it's another long-standing name gone from the city's nightlife, and a big building on Westgate Road now waiting for its next use.

Worth knowing: if Tokyo's terrace was your go-to, we'll let you know what opens in its place.
