Great North Pizza Co. is opening a panuozzo deli in Newcastle
Big Poppa's will sell pizza-dough sandwiches, Italian meats and cheeses and cannoli in the city centre from late 2027.
Great North Pizza Co., a local favourite for its stone-baked, hand-stretched pizzas, is planning a city-centre deli called Big Poppa's, ChronicleLive reports. It grew out of Great North Coffee Company, which started from a coffee van outside the Tyne Tunnel, and after seven years its pizzas have since turned up at Tynemouth Market, Mouth of the Tyne Festival and Slice Wars, Wylam Brewery's food battles. And no, the pizzas aren't going anywhere.
What's a panuozzo? An Italian street-food sandwich: Neapolitan pizza dough baked into a long, airy loaf, then sliced, filled and warmed through. After a trip to Naples, the team have been working on new combinations.
Also on the menu - Premium Italian meats and cheeses - Garlic and rosemary roast potatoes - Cannoli
It's still at the planning stage, aiming for November 2027, and the team will share progress on Instagram. They're promising "absolutely no boring sandwiches", and they hope the first shop will be the first of many.
