Just Eat pauses its AI menu photos after some very strange results

The tool was meant to save small restaurants the cost of a photographer. Instead it served up sausages floating in cola.

Just Eat has paused the roll-out of an AI tool that generated pictures for menu items, Restaurant Online reports. The idea was to help smaller independents add photos to their listings without paying for professional photography.

Some of the results missed badly. Examples included fried eggs and sausages floating in a glass of cola to represent a "breakfast soda", a tiny burger served inside a sauce pot, sushi rolls filled with cheese, and wine glasses holding chunks of watermelon. Just Eat has apologised and said the technology had teething problems.

Why it matters for your site: your delivery listing is a shop window, and a wrong picture sells the wrong dish. That means disappointed customers, refunds and poor ratings. Spend ten minutes this week going through your listing on each app. Check every image matches what actually goes in the bag, and swap any you didn't choose for a phone photo taken in decent daylight at the pass. Do the same check when you change the menu.
