Hospitality VAT campaigners to decide on a pub ban for MPs on 11 November

The proposal would cover MPs of any party who have not backed a cut from 20% to 10%.

A renewed campaign over hospitality VAT may bar MPs from pubs, The Morning Advertiser reports. Hospitality Voices will decide on 11 November whether to go ahead.

What is proposed: unlike last December's campaign against Labour MPs, this one would cover MPs from every party who have not publicly backed cutting VAT for hospitality from 20% to 10%. An MP could avoid or reverse a ban by backing a cut.

The numbers: founder Andy Lennox says 304 MPs currently support the campaign, according to the group's online tracker. He expects thousands of pubs could join, though no venue numbers are confirmed.

Why now: the Chancellor did not cut hospitality VAT in last week's Budget. Lennox says other forms of action are also being considered, and that questions put to the Treasury have not had a reply.

What it means for operators: nothing changes until 11 November. If you are asked to take part, think about how it sits with your guests, your team and your local trade before you commit.
