The Broad Chare on Newcastle Quayside has been ranked among the best 20 pubs in Britain by the Good Food Guide, ChronicleLive reports. It is the highest of five local pubs on the 2026 list, and it also made CAMRA's Good Beer Guide for 2027.

What it is: a two-floor pub near Live Theatre, with bar snacks downstairs and a full menu in the upstairs dining room. Over the years the snacks have ranged from a Scotch egg to a hand-raised pork pie with home-made piccalilli. There is a sun-trap beer garden for the summer.

The weekday deal: a £20 worker's lunch that changes weekly, with a main and a dessert. Recent mains include smoked haddock with leeks and a soft-boiled egg, bratwurst and shepherd's pie. Puddings include bread-and-butter pudding and treacle tart.

The rest of the list: four Northumberland pubs also made it: The Rat Inn at Anick (31), The Feathers Inn at Hedley on the Hill (64), The Kirkstyle Inn at Slaggyford (65) and The Ship Inn at Low Newton-by-the-Sea (71).

Go if: you want a proper pie and a proper pint on the Quayside. The pub warns that the guest ale sells out fast.
