Beer and pubs added £37.8bn to the UK economy in 2025 and supported almost 1m jobs, BBPA study finds

New analysis by Oxford Economics, commissioned by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), puts a fresh number on the sector's economic weight, The Morning Advertiser reports.

The headline figures for 2025 - £37.8bn of GVA from the beer and pub sector, supporting almost 1m jobs - £16.8bn in tax contributed, and an estimated £2.2bn of net capital investment - Pubs alone: £29.8bn of GVA, 849,600 jobs and £17.4bn in wages - Each region averages £3.2bn of GVA and 81,800 jobs

The BBPA is using the research to press its Budget case: permanent business rates reform, a beer duty freeze, a bigger draught duty discount and a review of employment costs. Chief executive Emma McClarkin pointed to the government's recently announced 20% cut in business rates as "a first step", and said the sector needs permanent reform to keep people in work.

The regional split matters as much as the total. An average of 81,800 jobs per region gives operators and trade bodies a constituency-level figure to put in front of local MPs.

What it means for operators: these are sector-wide, modelled figures, not a trading signal. Their value is in representation. If your group engages with MPs or local authorities before the Budget, pair the regional numbers with your own headcount, wage bill and capex pipeline.
